Overview

Definition

Data retention defines the policies of persistent data and records management for meeting legal and business data archival requirements.

In inPoint the retention time or retention period defines a time period in which the data is protected against unintentional or malice deletion. If the used storage system supports it, it is impossible to delete the files as long as the retention time is not over.

Architecture

HybridStore

The enforcing of the data protection is performed by HybridStore and if supported also by the underlying hardware.

The definition how long the data needs protection can be configured in several places in more and more detail, if using the correct API it can be defined individually for each archived document.

This means of course that a document does not need to be protected by a retention time but if one is configured it will be enforced by the system.

Changing the retention-time is possible but of course only increasing it!

inPoint

One of the features of inPoint is, that it supports multiple versions for a document.

The retention date for the whole document is always calculated from the last version. It's possible that the first version of a document can be cleaned while the latest version is still protected.
